Flower Boy Next Door, Initial Thoughts

Flower Boy Next Door

What can I say? I’d been looking forward to this show, not knowing what to expect, just that it was from the same people that made “Flower Boy Ramyun Shop” and “Shut Up Flower Boy Band”, which I loved. Then came the casting news — Park Shin Hye, Yoon Si Yoon, Kim Ji Hoon — and I was even more excited to see what they’d do with such a good cast. At Christmas, they gave us teaser video after teaser video, and I began to worry that there was gonna be a letdown after all this buildup.

I’m here to say, six episodes in, that it’s good — really, really good. I won’t make a final judgement until I’ve seen the last episode, but so far I’m not disappointed in the least. It’s a slower story, made up of small moments — some laugh out loud, some poignant — that come together into a whole that’s like hanging out with a group of good friends for an hour and a half every week.

You’ve got Park Shin Hye as Go Dok Mi, a girl who’s cut herself off from the world, but yearns for connections with other people. Yoon Si Yoon as Enrique, a child-like, very talkative videogame designer who has more depth and sees more than people realize (I just wanna squeeze him and pinch his cheeks, he’s so cute). And finally, Kim Ji Hoon as Oh Jin Rak, the grumpy webtoon artist living next door to Go Dok Mi who’s been silently keeping an eye on her. The side characters — Jin Rak’s roommate Dong Hoon, the webtoon editor, even the antagonist, Cha Do Hwi — are there mostly for comic relief and do their jobs well.

I’m having a good time watching this with my friend Laurie every week. We’ve been having lots of fun chatting and making snarky comments about Muppet Hunters (see Cha Do Hwi), as well as seeing the friendships and bromances developing. I’m going sit back and enjoy the rest of the show and trust that the writer and director have a plan for the finish. They haven’t disappointed me so far.

Here’s a cute intro video and a couple of teasers:

Watch it on Dramafever or Viki.

Nice. I’m also happy that this is as good as we had hoped. I like the surface overly zippy moments which are touched by hidden depth. I’m wondering what cranky webtoon writer’s backstory is. He has to have one with that name change.

I couldn’t agree more. I was so worried about a let down, from all the advertising. After all quite a few dramas with big names that have loads of marketing and hype have been let downs. Fashion King, Dr.Jin to name two.
Watching it with you, and being able to chat at the same time, has been loads of fun. The show goes by really fast, then I just replay after. 🙂 Of course having fun with Cha Do Hwi’s, wardrobe and Muppet Hunter, is fun too.
Looking forward tot he rest of their story.

This is such a good drama! So far! (I agree, it’s wise to wait until it’s all over to give a final verdict.) It’s actually hard to watch it live and get to the end of an episode and realize you have to wait a whole week to see more of these people’s lives. I’ve become pretty invested, and at a rather scary speed.
