Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Initial Thoughts

I’m about halfway through right now, and I’m really enjoying it. More than I thought I would.

I wasn’t sure how I’d like Park Min Young in this role, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised by her acting. Yoon Hee could easily have been only a fish-out-of-water, bumbling heroine — and she is, to a certain degree — but she also has intelligence and an iron will hiding behind her innocent face, and Park Min Young gets that across very well.

From reading other reviews I knew going in that Park Yuchun is an idol and this was one of his first roles, so I was interested to see how he did. I was, again, pleasantly surprised. I’m buying his thoughtful scholar with rigid principles who’s learning that there are shades of gray everywhere.

Also, the bromance between the guys (and girl) is fun to watch, and I love that Gu Yong Ha is becoming one of their four. He’s one of my favorites in this show, and I love how Song Joon Ki portrays him as the trickster troublemaker. He’s just the right combination of bored and very curious and is just poking at people to get a reaction, not necessarily malicious, but definitely not benevolent.

I’m interested to see how the story continues, and what happens after the guys find out she’s a girl — which is totally not a spoiler, because they have to figure it out some time, right?
